About

Champions of Christian education since 1986.

The Nehemiah Foundation was founded in 1986 to support Christian education, Biblical knowledge, and scientific scholarship. 40 years later, we are continuing that vision.

Our story

A foundation rebuilt for a new generation

The Nehemiah Foundation was chartered on March 21, 1986, “exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, and educational purposes.” Its first aim was “to expand the knowledge of and the influence of historic Christian teachings concerning all areas of life.” All four founders, Tom and Sylvia Singleton and Bill and Ann Baumgartner, homeschooled their own children, so Christian home education was part of that vision from the beginning.

The founders led the Foundation from 1986 to 2019, supporting Christian and homeschool education, family and pro-life organizations, the arts and mercy ministries.

In 2019 the current board took over and continued to focus the Foundation on science and Bible education, working with students, scientists and scholars around the world through the Genesis Fund.

In 2026 the board added the Homeschool Fund, which returns the Foundation to one of its first callings: helping Christian homeschool families.

Our name comes from Nehemiah, who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem with the people of God. We see our work the same way: building up the next generation, stone by stone.
